Pilaf, pilau or ‘seasoned rice’

Posted by Ed Fri, 29 Apr 2011 09:56:00 GMT

A pilaf or pilau (or ‘seasoned rice’ as my Mum calls it) is made by first coating rice with oil or fat before cooking it with seasonings and / or added ingredients.

As an example, here's a recipe for a ‘seasoned rice’ with prawns, fish and peas (serves 4 people as a main course).

Mind you crisp up the dead baby's ears, lest you be scolded

When an old friend sent a cry for help in dealing with the unexpected gift of a suckling pig, which he described unpoetically as "a dead baby in a cardboard box", the right thing to do was clear. I reached for Jane Grigson's Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery.

Fake iPod 4th Generation 2

Posted by Ed Sun, 07 Feb 2010 23:10:00 GMT

In December I bought a fake iPod on Ebay. It was advertised as an ipod 4th Generation in mint condition. Its physical appearance is extremely like that of the genuine article as you can see from these pictures.

printing from Textmate

Posted by Ed Tue, 07 Apr 2009 19:02:00 GMT

Textmate is a great lightweight text editor but printing functionality is very poor. Here’s a way suggested by Jeremy Wilkins to print out the current file or selection in small font size with line numbering. Put this command into a “Command” in the “Bundle Editor” and assign it to the keystroke ⌘P if you like:

a2ps --center-title=`basename "$TM_FILEPATH"` --font-size 8 -C --pretty-print --columns 1 -M A4 -R --tabsize=2 --line-numbers 5 -o - - | ps2pdf14 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 - /Users/fred/misc/tm_print/textmate_print.pdf && open -a /Applications/Preview.app /Users/fred/misc/tm_print/textmate_print.pdf

You will need a2ps and ps2pdf14 also. The latter you should have but the former is available through macports:

sudo port install a2ps

UPDATE

Another good solution which I use is to print from TextMate via vim which gives you a syntax-highlighted and line-numbered result (or however you choose to configure it.) In addition to vim it requires ps2pdf but these are easy to install with macports etc.

The only limitation is that the file needs to be saved first.

See this page which shows how to set up the macro as a TextMate ‘command’:

Here are some notes I made a couple of years ago and which were useful when I had to re-install a windows machine which I use for music.

talking about failure

Posted by Ed Sun, 11 Nov 2007 10:47:00 GMT

Here’s an uncompromising speech given in 1983 to graduates of Mills College by the great science fiction writer Ursula Le Guin.

An extract:

Success is somebody else’s failure. Success is the American Dream we can keep dreaming because most people in most places, including thirty million of ourselves, live wide awake in the terrible reality of poverty. No, I do not wish you success. I don’t even want to talk about it. I want to talk about failure.

Because you are human beings you are going to meet failure. You are going to meet disappointment, injustice, betrayal, and irreparable loss. You will find you’re weak where you thought yourself strong. You’ll work for possessions and then find they possess you. You will find yourself – as I know you already have – in dark places, alone, and afraid.

What I hope for you, for all my sisters and daughters, brothers and sons, is that you will be able to live there, in the dark place. To live in the place that our rationalizing culture of success denies, calling it a place of exile, uninhabitable, foreign.

blue jeans for Generation Apple?

Posted by Ed Sun, 11 Nov 2007 10:00:00 GMT

A stimulating article by the extraordinary Reg Braithwaite reminds us how Levi Strauss cashed in on the San Francisco gold rush by selling jeans to miners rather than by looking for gold.

The article then challenges us to find analogies for the blue jean in today’s scramble to re-invent the distribution of the music and entertainment industry, a scramble in which Apple continues to get the better of the industry dinosaurs.

Any bright blue jean ideas, let me know.
